Golf: Molder looks to buck trend

SANDY - The 54-hole leader has not gone on to a win in the
past 10 events on the Nationwide Tour. That's a statistic that
Craig Kanada loves right now.
Kanada, 37, shot a 6-under-par 66 in between weather delays
at Willow Creek Country Club on Saturday to move way up the
leaderboard at the Utah Championship, but still
trails the leader, Bryce Molder, by four shots.
Molder, the second-round leader by five shots, the largest
36-hole lead on the tour this season, was on the course Saturday
when play was suspended for the second, and final, time. He
is at 19 under through 15 holes, and almost assuredly will
be the 54-hole leader when he finishes the third round this
morning.
Ken Duke, who had just putted out on No. 18 when the suspension
came at 5:50 p.m., is in third at 13 under, while Jamie Broce
and Scott Parel also finished their rounds Saturday and are
at 12 under.
Molder is one of seven players yet to finish the third round.
Play will resume at 7:45 a.m. today.
Play was halted for the first time at 2:30 p.m. due to lightning
in the area, and restarted at 4:12 p.m. In the eight years
this tournament has been held at Willow Creek, it has experienced
at least one weather suspension every year except 2004.
Kanada said it will take another exceptionally low round to
catch Molder and continue the streak of leader futility.
"I was eight shots back to start the day, so I knew I had to shoot lights
out," said Kanada (pronounced: Kuh-NAH-duh). "That's pretty much
what I was trying to do, and pretty much what I will have to do again."
Sandy's Todd Tanner, a Tuesday qualifier who spends most of
his time on the Canadian Tour, also shot a 66 and is tied for
10th at 10-under 206. He tied for 22nd last year. The top 25
professionals earn exemptions into next week's Nationwide event
in Boise, Idaho.
Kanada, who finished about 20 minutes before the final suspension,
made an eagle on his first hole and was 4 under through four
holes. After the first delay, he returned to the course and
three-putted No. 15 for his only bogey, but righted himself
with a birdie on the par-5 17th hole.
Sandy's Steve Schneiter shot a 73 Saturday after Friday's 66
and is tied for 33rd, while West High junior Gipper Finau,
who on Friday become the youngest golfer in Nationwide Tour
history to make the cut, shot a 76 and is in last place.
